The Vintage Garden Farms is a division of Arc of Greater New Orleans, a non-profit that serves children and adults with intellectual disabilities like Down syndrome or autism. VGF is one of Arc’s social enterprises located a few miles from downtown New Orleans in Chalmette, LA. The VGF farm consist of less than a dozen crewmembers, and yet, we produced and harvested an average of 1,200 pounds of produce per month--everything from peppers to kale to ginger. What’s more remarkable is that all of our work on the farm is done by hand because the farm has no professional equipment, not even a tractor. Vegetable rows are built by crewmembers with dirt tools, a project that takes several days just to get a handful of rows built and shaped. It’s the lack of necessary farming equipment that has prompted our search for help.
We would like to start an affordable CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. This program will allow us to expand the farm’s agricultural capacity as well as further our mission to employ even more people with disabilities. Despite our efforts and tenacity, it’s becoming more difficult to operate as a fully functioning farm without support of a tractor, a greenhouse, a shed, utility costs, and other necessary expenses incurred on a farm like equipment maintenance. In order to keep our farmers working and keep our produce in the markets, we are seeking your support.
With your support we know we can build on our success. Since 2011, the farm has been a consistent vendor at the Crescent City Farmers Markets. We've sold produce to Hollygrove Farm & Market, Maypop Herb Shop, New Orleans Food Co-op, Indieplate, as well as numerous restaurants in the Greater New Orleans metro area. Our nursery has also provided plants for countless home gardeners, community growers, and landscape companies. We want to keep this going, and a way to do that is to help us buy a tractor, shed and the implements we need. We kindly ask that you support the Vintage Garden Farms. On behalf of all the VGF crewmembers, we thank you.
